Welcome to the first issue of The Standard, a new monthly newsletter for everyone connected to Pools Scientific, whether you found us through the podcast or through the lab servicing your actual pool. Most of you have only known one side of this. If you’re a listener, you’ve probably never seen what an actual field visit looks like. If you’re a client, you may not know a podcast exists at all. Every month, this newsletter is built to give you a real window into the other side.
I also want to point something out rather than let you find it by accident. This issue is called The Standard for a reason, and it’s not a coincidence that Episode 20 goes live this same week. Twenty episodes in, the show turns for the first time from your own water toward something bigger: the actual codes, regulations, and standards written into law that are supposed to keep every pool in this country safe. Some of it holds up. A lot of it doesn’t. This newsletter’s name is a quiet nod to exactly where the show is headed next.

The Science
Every issue, this section teases one real, verifiable finding, chemistry, biology, physics, whatever’s genuinely interesting that month, and points you to the full argument on the blog when there’s more to say. It exists to prove that the research behind this platform never actually stops.
This month: phosphates. Ask five people in the pool industry whether phosphates matter and you’ll get two confident, opposite answers. One camp says they’re irrelevant if your FC and CYA are correct. The other treats them as a primary threat requiring constant removal. Both are half right, and the real position is more interesting than either extreme.
The Technology
This is where anything genuinely changing how pools are understood or managed lives, whatever form it takes, real mechanism, never a paid placement.
If you’re running a salt chlorine generator, an AOP system, UV light combined with ozone, is the strongest complement available right now. UV breaks ozone apart into hydroxyl radicals, aggressive, short lived oxidizers that clear organic contamination faster than chlorine alone. That doesn’t replace your salt cell, it takes disinfection load off it, which means fewer of the byproducts that build up in any chlorinated system over time. Not the cheapest upgrade available, but one with real mechanism behind it, not a marketing claim standing in for one.
Poolside
From the field where real pools get maintained and serviced, this is where seasonal care and maintenance live, tied to the actual season here in the Kansas City metro, and often built from something the lab is seeing on the route right now.
Most pool companies treat a closed pool as a chemistry problem that goes away until spring. It doesn’t. Water temperature in this area can drop from the 80s°F (upper 20s°C) in July to the 40s°F (single digits °C) by December, and that swing changes how the water behaves even with nobody swimming in it and nobody watching. A pool sitting untouched from October through March can drift out of balance over that stretch and get opened in April already carrying damage that started in December, quietly. That’s why the lab runs an active off-season water balance maintenance program on every applicable pool we service, checking and correcting through the closed months instead of walking away after the last swim. As far as we’ve been able to confirm, we’re still the only pool company in the country doing this as a standing practice.

Episode 19 aired this past Tuesday, taking on a real, live disagreement in pool chemistry: is every pool the same, or does pool type actually change the underlying chemistry. We went through the case for both sides, above ground, vinyl, fiberglass, and gunite pools do interact with water differently, and history explains a lot of why the industry treats them so differently today, but the core chemistry targets don’t move as much between pool types as most owners have been led to believe. Episode 20, “Let That Stuff Go,” follows this Tuesday, closing out this run of episodes and turning the show toward the standards question mentioned above.
